Barbed Steel Wire

Barbed wire is a fence material consisting of steel wire with sharp and pointed knots at regular intervals. Barbed wire usually consists of two wires twisted to add strength in order resist temperature changes and harsh weather conditions. Sharp points, called barbs, are usually made up of short pieces of wire wrapped around one or both steel wires.

By 1890, fenced pastureland had virtually replaced the open range in the western United States.

The first patents on barbed wire were taken out in the United States in 1867, but it was not until 1874, when Joseph Glidden of De Kalb, Illinois, invented a practical machine for its manufacture, that the innovation became widespread.
